How do I start a recording?

Open the app and tap the PROTECT button on the main screen. Recording begins immediately with GPS tagging and cryptographic sealing. If you've selected tags beforehand, they are attached to the recording automatically.

Where are my recordings stored?

Recordings are uploaded to our encrypted cloud vault (Backblaze B2) in real time as you record. They are also accessible at thegroundtruth.io/my-recordings once you sign in.

What is the Dead Man's Switch?

The Dead Man's Switch is a 5-minute countdown that activates when you begin recording. Tap the green pill ("I'm Safe") to reset the timer. If the countdown reaches zero, your recording is immediately released to your emergency contacts. This feature is designed for situations where you may be incapacitated.

What is Stealth Mode?

Stealth Mode blanks your screen during recording so the device appears inactive. Recording and upload continue in the background. Tap the screen to see status. Tap the eye icon to exit stealth mode.

How do I add emergency contacts?

Go to Settings → Emergency Contacts from the app drawer. Add contacts by name and phone number or email. They will receive notifications when you trigger an emergency release or the Dead Man's Switch activates.

What is a hash chain?

Every recording chunk is assigned a SHA-256 hash that incorporates the hash of the previous chunk. This creates a tamper-evident chain — if any chunk is altered, the entire chain breaks. This is what makes recordings court-admissible.

Does the app work without internet?

Yes. Recordings are captured and saved locally. They upload to the vault automatically when connectivity is restored.

What states require all-party consent for recording?

The app detects your GPS location and shows you the consent law for your current state. All-party consent (everyone must agree) is required in: California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington. How do I delete a recording?

Open the recording in My Recordings, tap the options menu, and select Delete. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Contact support@thegroundtruth.io and we'll process your cancellation within 1 business day. You retain access until the end of your current billing period.
